Eyes Ever Watchful
Out of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, an article about the Commissionaires, a longstanding Canadian chapter of an organization founded in the UK after the Crimean War, dedicated to finding a place for former service members to use their skills as they transition back to civilian life. Check out “Providing Security, In More Ways Than One.”
Odd, perhaps, that I might think of self-calm in the context of a security company.
Yet self-calm and its empowerment are not just about a good relaxation exercise (even if I’m invested in those as well!). To connect to work that is meaningful, that makes a difference in the lives of others, even it’s “only” on the small-scale of keeping a small to mid-size business running safely: that can revive an “old self” enough to bring it to the morning mirror’s conversation each day, to look back into those eyes once taught ever to be watchful, and say:
“We can do this. We’ve got what it takes. If we’re going to be on-guard anyway, old friend, might as well be for a good reason. Let’s get going.”
Not a bad way to start the day, in Kingston, Toronto, Montréal, anywhere.
Until tomorrow, be well,
